The Mitsubishi Montero Sport Black Series is priced at Php 2,054,000, and is based on the GT 2WD variant. While the black treatment on the exterior gives it a modern, aggressive look similar to its competitors, Mitsubishi’s offering still stands out with subtle details.
Upfront, as expected from the Black Series, the headlight extensions and lower bumper are blacked out, giving it that meaner stance. You won’t need to worry about asking for a dechrome because Mitsubishi has you covered in that department.

Engine and Performance
Under the hood, the Montero Sport Black Series comes equipped with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine, capable of producing 179 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. This powertrain is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters, sending power to the rear wheels since this is a 2WD version.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the Montero Sport returned an average of 7.4 km/l in city traffic and an impressive 17.9 km/l on the highway at a steady 80 km/h.
The 18-inch black alloy wheels and auto-folding side mirrors further add to the sleek look. Chrome accents can still be found on the door handles, step board, and around the roof rails, balancing the sporty and premium vibe.
Interior and Cargo Space
At the back, you’ll find a powered tailgate that opens up to reveal generous cargo space. With the third-row seats folded flat, you have ample room for all your luggage. But even with the third-row seats up, you can still comfortably fit two medium-sized suitcases, making it a versatile option for families or long trips.
The third-row seats are best suited for kids, as adults will find legroom a bit tight, especially if you’re taller than 5’6. However, cup holders, air vents, and a 12-volt socket add a touch of comfort for passengers.
The second row is more accommodating, with a center armrest and cupholders. The headroom here is better, and passengers can enjoy individual air vents, two USB ports, and even a 220-volt socket for charging devices like laptops.
That said, I wish the Black Series came with a darker headliner to complement its theme. It would have given the cabin a more cohesive, premium feel.
Technology and Infotainment
The dashboard is a mix of old and new, with a digital gauge cluster adding a modern touch, and 8-way powered adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger, which add to the comfort.
As for the infotainment system, it’s functional but could use a design refresh. Fortunately, it comes equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can easily integrate your smartphone for navigation and media controls. It also has dual-zone climate control, an electronic parking brake with auto brake hold, and plenty of USB ports.
One downside is the cellphone storage. It’s on the smaller side, so if you have a large phone, you may need to place it vertically.
Safety and Driving Experience
The Montero Sport Black Series doesn’t skimp on safety features. It comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, active stability and traction control, hill start assist, trailer stability assist, rear parking sensors, a 360-camera system, and adaptive cruise control—a feature usually reserved for 4×4 variants.
In terms of driving, the Montero Sport Black Series is a pleasure. The steering feels light yet responsive, and the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels are well-controlled, making for a comfortable and quiet ride. On rough roads, though, if you hit a pothole too fast, you might feel a bit of a jolt—so make sure to slow down for those!
When it comes to handling, especially during sharp turns, you might notice some body roll due to the SUV’s height, but it’s not too bothersome. The throttle is highly responsive, so whether you want a smooth, chill drive or a more aggressive experience, it’s all under your control.
